John, when he names the Person in the Trinity 1 John 5:7 , chooses rather to call Him Word than Son; for word is a phrase more communicable than son. In the name He bears, in the honors ascribed to Him, in His superiority to angels, in His relationship as Creator both to heaven and earth , we recognize in language which in the letter of it strongly reminds us of Philo, yet in its spirit is so different the description of one who though clothed with human nature is no mere subordinate being, but the possessor of all Divine prerogatives and the sharer of the very nature of God Himself. The nearest approach to it is in Revelation 19:13, where the conqueror is called the Word of God; and it is recalled in the phrases Word of Life, and the Life was manifested 1 John 1:1, 2. Taken together they present Christ before His incarnation as at once personally distinct from, yet equal with, the Father--as the eternal life which was with God and was manifested to us. Greek philosophy may have used the word in reference to divine reason, but John used it to note many of the attributes of Jesus.
The philosophy which he followed belonged completely to the form of Platonism which had been developing for more than a century, especially at Alexandria, and was named sometimes after Plato and sometimes after Pythagoras, although Stoicism, especially in Philo, contributed largely to it.
